Economic Aspects

Through the subject ‘Measurement of buildings’, I want to explore the economic process of materials and how the building can become less expensive for residents. Through this second year subject I had to learn how to price a building. All these prices and researching other materials that may cost less has interested me in trying to find a way to find materials that can be sourced at a low price. It has also given me an idea to think about what the building can be transferred into to help fund the construction of the building overall. This could include building commercial buildings at the base level of my building so that rent can be used to fund it.

Recycling Materials

By recycling materials it can reduce the amount of CO2 emissions produced when creating a building. When a building is first created it produces CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. However, when materials from this building is reused it still produces CO2 emissions however, the amount is reduced. The amount is reduced as there is no initial high energy required when the raw materials are extracted as they have already been extracted previously. The main types of materials I want to recycle include structural steel, shipping storage containers, and recycled timber. The structural steel will be recycled from a local factory 77-83 Sutton St, North Melbourne that will be demolished. The shipping storage containers will be taken from the docks for the overall core of each apartment. The recycled timber will be taken from local properties that will be demolished and be used for cladding.

Green Spaces

Through the studio subject ‘Design Studio Beta’, I have really began to appreciate the use of green spaces and gardens within a building design. It gives the building more life and creates a more home feel. Although the subject was a mixture of architecture and landscape architecture I have learnt a lot and been inspired a lot by this subject. From this subject I have decided to include a lot of garden spaces and greenery into my building landscaping design. As my building is designed for people who are homeless I am hoping the use of green spaces will help connect the community together and provide the residents with a space that they can relax in and grow their own plants and vegetables in.
