The bubble

Concept

The key concept that I wanted to explore through my pavilion is the idea of playfulness and the use of natural light in a space. I wanted to combine and summarise what I explored in M1 - Radix, and M2 into one project. The main structure is made up of circles and spheres. I did this by one section of my pavilion is made up of spheres stacked up and layered on top of each other and the other section of circle-like shapes cutouts. By doing this allows light into space and creates lots of circle shadows on the ground.

The main activity within the pavilion is mainly sitting. This is because it is a relaxing atmosphere to sit in. It is mostly children that would play around in the shadow area as well. Adults may also sit leaning on the aluminum solid. Walk-ing is also in the sections where there is the highest traffic flow as well. There may also be people standing around where the people are sitting. This may be because parents watching their children or people just standing there to take in the pavilion.

The light rays can enter the pavilion easily through the holes on the pavilion’s framing. The light when it hits the aluminium solid would also then bounce back off. Due to the frame being white plaster it would make the light heat not enter the space so that it would be cooler and not as hot. The holes also allow air to flow freely and allow more air into the pavilion. However, in some areas where there are holes the light would enter through the holes and into the interior space.

The privacy level is low on the outside grass section this is because it is located high due to the hierachy of the pavilion being placed on a higher platform to so that people walking towards it from far away are able to see it. The privacy level is medium where the plaster frame is because of the holes allowing a lot of light in and people from the exterior are able to look in. The privacy level is the highest where the aluminium solids are because it is closed off compared to the other space and is semi-enclosed.

Circulation

The shortest path through the pavilion is entry through the main entrance and then out by the second entrance with the steps. By walking straight through the pavilion an individual is able to experience the whole pavilion and walk through the main experience of the pavilion which is where the shadow reflects onto the ground and children can experience it and play in it.

Movement through the pavilion can be seen in three directions of the pavilion. There are three entries into the pavilion which the two main entrances have steps to enter. The movement within the pavilion is free-flowing as there is a sense of privacy inside the pavilion but also out in a public space which allows the pavilion to have a lot of free movement.

The traffic flow is the highest through the main entrance and the second entrance where the steps are to enter into the pavilion. Surrounding the pavilion it is low traffic flow as people are still able to view the pavilion from below and walk around it following the concrete path, as the path is in a circular form.
